World history knows many cases when the authorities oppressed the Jews. Unfortunately, Russian history is no exception. In the 19th century, Russia had the largest Jewish community in the world – 67% of the entire Jewish people. But as a result of mass pogroms, and then the civil war, more than 2 million Jews left Russia, mostly to the United States. In 1934, the Jewish Autonomous Region was even created (it still exists today), although only about 1.5% of the Jews live there. On the territory of the USSR, during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945, about 1.5-2 million Jews were killed by the German fascists and their accomplices. In the 80-90s, after the lifting of restrictions on emigration, more than half of the Jewish population of Russia left the country, mainly to the United States, Germany and Israel. In modern Russia, there are many public Jewish organizations, no one oppresses the Jewish people, many synagogues function. In 2012, the world’s largest Jewish museum and tolerance center (8,500 sq. m) opened in Moscow.
