GEOGRAPHY
Russia is a state located in the east of Europe and the north of Asia. It occupies about 1/3 of the territory of Eurasia and 1/8 of the entire land mass; by the area it occupies, it is the largest state in the world.
The European part of the country (about 23% of the area) includes territories to the west of the Ural Mountains. The Asian part of Russia, which occupies the largest part of the territory (about 77% of the area), lies to the east of the Urals and is also called Siberia and the Far East.
Russia is washed by the waters of three oceans: from the west – the Atlantic, from the east – the Pacific, from the north – the Arctic. Its coastline is 37 thousand kilometers long. In Russia there are 2,8 mln rivers, about 3 mln lakes. The most famous river in Russia – Volga and the most famous lake – Baikal.
The Russian Federation borders 16 countries:
Norway and Finland in the northwest;
Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Belarus and Ukraine in the west;
Georgia, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan in the southwest;
China, Mongolia and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea in the east.
Even with the USA we have a common water border. It passes through the waters of the Bering Strait, its length is 49 kilometers. The border is located between the islands of Ratmanov (Russia) and Kruzenshtern (USA).
